This study describes a standardized protocol for monitoring the rigor index (RI) and applies it exploratorily to two single-species experimental sessions, one with Nile tilapia (n = 4) and another with African catfish (n = 5); because species, batch, day and session were not independently replicated, the between-session contrast reported here does not isolate a species effect. After spinal cord section, fish were kept at room temperature without refrigeration, and caudal distance was measured every 20 min for 520 analytical min. Area under the curve (AUC) was the primary outcome, and between-session comparisons were exploratory. AUC was 386.98 ± 67.76 %·h in the tilapia session and 106.20 ± 89.07 %·h in the catfish session (difference 280.78 %·h; 95% CI: 184.52–363.91; p = 0.0159). The observed pattern was consistent with the exploratory hypothesis of a greater integrated rigor response in the tilapia session and greater individual heterogeneity in the catfish session. Because species, batch, day and session were not independently replicated, the contrast does not represent an isolated species effect.
