In a time of constant change, including intellectual traditions, Macunaíma traced the vision of man, hero and language in the modernist period, promoting a rupture of traditionalism in the manifestations of Brazilian artistic intelligence. In search of freedom of expression and creation, the work, which deals with the national reality and the valorization of popular culture, mainly of popular speech, reconstructs meanings and instigates self-critical revisions about the genuinely Brazilian language. In this article, we seek to highlight the language view proposed by modern authors, especially Mário de Andrade. In view of this, the postulates of Sociolinguistics are used to analyze the representations of the stigmatized linguistic phenomena highlighted in the work, by elucidating the recurrent use of terms of the non-standard variety, explaining how each linguistic phenomenon occurs and how much these processes are related to today.
