Abstract

This article proposes an analysis of the verbal, graphic and imagery strategies of the break in linearity of time in children's books that can be explored by reading mediators. Children's book is mostly composed of illustrations and picturebooks are composed of the interaction of image, text and support. It’s necessary to investigate what of their constituent elements, such as covers, typography and color palette may indicate breaks in the supposed temporal linearity of the narrative. As a case study, the picturebook Depressa, Devagar (2013) of the Portuguese publisher Planeta Tangerina will be analysed in the three mentioned elements. Based on theoretical contributions from design, illustration and books for children, we intend to increase the possibility of interpretation of picturebooks and discuss how the most recent editorial modalities bring new challenges and new approaches to reading mediators, whether in the classroom, libraries or other shared reading spaces.
