Abstract

The river fishing in the Baixo Amazonas region is carried out by fishermen of their main cities like Santarém. The floodplain lakes are extensive and extend from one shore to another, with a diverse biota present in a unique ecosystem (RUFFINO, 2005). The objective of this study is to analyze the fish marketing process and briefly identify the sanitary conditions of sale locations. The research took place in the city of Santarem, in the western region of Pará, through direct approach to consumers, the two main marketing points, applying a questionnaire with closed questions, which occurred in April. The products found on the market are represented by different ichthyological species caught by artisanal fishing and some specimens derived from the cultivation activity as tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum). Some species has no significant demand, however, during the harvest period (June) would raise their consumption because increased supply of the product and reduction in price, such as jaraqui (Semaprochilodus insignis). The fairs of Santarém, among the species found those obtained higher rate than sales was the tambaqui (44%), Curimatã (20%), Tucunaré (19%) pescada (18%). The purchaser prices of goods are gutted and scaled fish, to favor adding value to the product price. The market Santarém, presented a great variety of fish species. Fairs the product price is influenced by the fishing ban periods, rather than factors such as size and morphological characteristics of the species, justified by the law of supply and demand. In health evaluation markets do not meet the sanitary surveillance legislation, though the market stage was presented as reference to other outlets, because the proper use of equipment.
