A MÃE-D’ÁGUA, BY GONÇALVES DIAS: A POETIC IMAGE OF A MULTIFACETED FIGURE

Abstract

The poet Antônio Gonçalves Dias received a certain reputation and recognition in the literary world of his time and subsequent times up to the present day. This fact must be due both to the poetic value of your compositions and to some of the themes you chose to address, which contained elements already belonging to Brazilian culture at the time. One of these poems is A Mãe-D'água, which was published in the category of American Poems in the work Últimos Cantos (1851) and refers to a myth whose many variants in different cultures over time made the Mãe-D'água a multifaceted figure (Cascudo, 2012). From this perspective, considering the different ways in which this being has already been represented and the specific characteristics of the images constructed through poetic text (Paz, 1982), this article analyzes the poetic image of Mãe-D'água constructed by Gonçalves Dias in his, a poem that despite using myth as raw material, has a specific reality (Bachelard, 1993). Thus, considering the theoretical support used, which includes the theorists already mentioned, plus authors such as Bergson (2010), Ricoeur (2007) and Moisés (2000), in addition to Blanchot (2005), Silva (2011) and Galeno (2010), It is understood that the image of Mãe-D'água in the space of the poem can house several others, since its poetic character offers a certain freedom to unite different and even conflicting realities in a single image (Paz, 1982).

Solange Santana Guimarães Morais, Universidade Estadual do Maranhão - UEMA

She has a PhD in Literature Science from UEMA/UFRJ (2014), a Master's degree in Literature Theory from UFPE (2002), and a specialization in Reading and Text Production from PUC/MG (2000). She is currently an Adjunct Professor II, 40h, Director of the Letters Courses at the CENTRO DE ESTUDOS SUPERIORES DE CAXIAS, of the UNIVERSIDADE ESTADUAL DO MARANHÃO (STATE UNIVERSITY OF MARANHÃO). She has experience in the area of Literature with an emphasis on Literature, Literary Theory, Comparative Literature and Maranhão Literature. She is a professor in the Postgraduate Program i Literature at uema. Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Portuguese Language Teaching - CESC. Leader of the Maranhão Literature Research Center - NuPLiM/CNPq-CESC/UEMA. Member of LANMO/Mexico. Member of UEMA's Research Ethics Council. Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Literature and Languages - Juçara, of the Department of Language at CESC-UEMA. Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary League of Literature Courses - LICLE/CESC-UEMA.

Luíla Silva Lima Farias , State University of Maranhão

She is a Master's student in the Postgraduate Program in Literature at the Universidade Estadual do Maranhão - UEMA (State University of Maranhão)  (2023). Postgraduate student in Informatics in Education at the Federal Institute of Education of Maranhão - IFMA (2022 -). Graduated in Languages and Literature from the Universidade Estadual do Maranhão - UEMA (State University of Maranhão)  (2018 - 2022). She is a member of the Literature, Art and Media Research Center (LAMID /CNPq-UEMA) and the Informatics, Literature and Linguistics Research Center (NuPILL/CNPq - UFSC). Her interests are themes related to Brazilian Literature, Literary Theory and the relationship between literature and technology.

Nadja Hedra de Queiroz Lima, Universidade Estadual do Maranhão - UEMA

She is a Master's student in the Postgraduate Program in Literature at the Universidade Estadual do Maranhão - UEMA (State University of Maranhão)  (2023). She is also Graduated in Languages and Literature from the State University of Maranhão - Campus Caxias. Gonçalves Dias researcher.

Valéria de Carvalho Santos, Universidade Estadual do Maranhão - UEMA

She is a Master's student in the Postgraduate Program in Literature at the Universidade Estadual do Maranhão - UEMA (State University of Maranhão)  (2023). Graduated in Languages and Literature from the Universidade Estadual do Maranhão - UEMA (State University of Maranhão)  (2018 - 2022). She is also a Member of the Núcleo de Pesquisa em Literatura Maranhense (Maranhão Literature Research Center) (NuPLIM/CNPq - CESC/UEMA) and she studies Memory, Maranhão Literature and Literary Theory.
