IDENTITY MOVEMENTS AND THE LEGACY OF TRADITION: A READING OF THE POEM “ANTÔNIO GONÇALVES DIAS”, BY INÊS PEREIRA MACIEL

Abstract

This work aims to analyze the poem Antônio Gonçalves Dias, by the Maranhão-born contemporary writer Inês Pereira Maciel, based on the possible interchanges with The Song of Exile and I-Juca Pirama, by Gonçalves Dias, to understand the identity relationships between the poetic subjects of the aforementioned writers. The act of remembering is, at the same time, a construction of belonging, with identities often constructed from the process of remembrance and the relationships established in collective practices (CANDAU, 2016). This is because memory enables the temporal shift between present/past, and ancient/modern. The theoretical assumption of the paper is the thought of Maurice Halbwachs (2006), who establishes a relationship between individual and collective memory, and that of Joel Candau (2011), who proposes reflections on memory and identity. In contemporary literary productions, there has been an interest among writers in dialogue with tradition, through discursive re-elaborations that point to new reflections and perspectives. In this sense, the work of Gonçalves Dias has been recurrent. The poem Antônio Gonçalves Dias, by Inês Maciel, shares gestures and forms of expression with elements of the romantic poet's production and reveals forms of identity that were consolidated over time, through the memorial process.
